Random lengths / staggered pattern façade cladding
Wooden façade cladding can be installed in various ways.
A common method is installing in random lengths, also known as a staggered pattern. The most suitable installation method depends on the specific project, façade, and surface area. It also comes down to personal preference and the availability of the wood widths and lengths.
On this expert page, we explain the advantages and possible disadvantages of random lengths, also referred to as installation in a “staggered pattern.”
Random lengths mean that different board lengths are installed mixed together across the façade. In the photo below, you can see what this looks like.
Advantages of random lengths:
Most efficient: Because every offcut can be reused, waste is minimized. Each leftover piece can be used to start the next row. This method is also commonly applied when installing flooring.
Cost-effective: This method requires the least amount of wood for your project. You are also not restricted to specific board lengths for your façade.
Spacious look: It creates a dynamic and playful appearance on any surface. On larger façades, such as office buildings or multi-storey homes where joints are necessary due to maximum available board lengths, this method still provides a very clean look.
Flexible: Around door and window frames and near façade corners, shorter pieces can be used, making installation easier and ensuring a better fit.
Installation tips for random lengths:
Joints: You can manage the joints between the different vertical sections by cutting the boards at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. This ensures optimal water drainage. In the photo below, you can see a close-up of the installation with chamfered edges.
Battens/supporting structure: To properly support the joints, you can place an additional ventilation batten at the exact point where the boards meet, using leftover pieces of the substructure. If you are using thermally modified wood, a spacing of 6 to 10 mm is sufficient.
Horizontal and vertical: Both vertical and horizontal façade cladding can be installed in a staggered pattern or random lengths.
Board lengths: Purchase various board lengths and mix them during installation. This prevents a repetitive pattern from appearing.
