Thermo Ayous

Thermo Ayous is a highly popular wood species – in fact, it is our sustainable bestseller. Untreated Ayous is commonly used in saunas, where it is also known as Abachi. This wood remains cool to the touch, even at high temperatures.

The benefits of Thermo Ayous wood

Sustainable

  • Durability class 1–2 (after thermal modification), resulting in a service life of 20–25 years without treatment.
  • Natural resistance to fungi and insects helps minimise maintenance costs.

Clean appearance

  • A calm grain pattern with minimal knots creates a clean and elegant appearance. As it weathers, Ayous develops a beautiful, even grey tone.

Environmentally friendly

  • Renewable resource: a fast-growing tree from West Africa, harvested in a sustainable manner.
  • An environmentally friendly choice for a wide range of construction projects.

Hardness and weight

  • A softwood with a low weight, making it easy to handle and ideal for installation in higher areas on façades.

Workability

  • A very soft wood that is easy to work with and cut to size. Care should be taken when nailing to prevent the nails from being driven in too deeply.

Highly versatile

Excellent insulation

  • Natural resistance to fungi and insects minimizes maintenance costs.

Dimensions

  • Thicknesses: 26 mm to 80 mm.
  • Lengths: up to 6050 mm.
  • Widths: 80 mm to 305 mm.

Treatment

  • Can be applied untreated on façades, where it weathers to a beautiful, even grey tone.
Various treatments are available to preserve the brown colour, such as an exterior oil, which maintains the natural appearance of the wood. The grain remains visible and the oil is easy to apply. Treatment with a stain is also possible.

Impregnation: An alternative method to prevent greying is pressure impregnation. This treatment is comparable to the green impregnation commonly used for garden timber. With Ayous, however, it does not result in a green colour but in a slightly darker brown tone, due to the wood’s naturally darker colour.
